Fresh Starts

It’s back-to-school season, so with this post I thought I’d provide some tips for starting fresh. This advice is applicable not only to students but also to working people and anyone starting or restarting something.

1. Develop a routine. Think of things that you’ve got to get done regularly and build them into your calendar – even simple yet important things like meals can go on your calendar. Building healthy habits can contribute to your success by keeping you on track each day, which then helps you make time for other things that you may need or want to do. Although every minute of every day can’t – and probably shouldn’t – be planned out, having some of your day on a schedule can positively impact your mental health because there’s less room for forgetfulness and the subsequent guilty feeling for not accomplishing whatever is on your list.

2. Think positively. Life is hard, but having a winner’s mentality goes a long way. The words that we say to ourselves affect how we feel about ourselves and how we behave. If you want to start and finish strong, the first place you win the battle is in your mind.

3. Take risks. If you’re unhappy with where you are in your life currently, you might try pivoting in your career or starting over entirely. Ponder this quote: “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” Don’t be afraid to fail. Successful people get back up and try again.

4. Get organized. This is important, especially when starting something new, because if you do develop a routine, organization will be your best friend. Here’s why: Once you start forming habits, you’ll have to have some available time to get other tasks done. Perhaps in order of importance, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, so you’ve got to stay organized and pace yourself.

5. Manage your time well. Remember that life isn’t all about work. You want to enjoy yourself too. Time management can help you make the most of your day.

I hope you found these tips helpful. What would you say is helpful when you’re in a starting season? Any things to avoid? Let me know in the comments!

Signed, Lai
